Finally, a Warm Day

After what felt like an endless stretch of cold, ice, and even snow, today finally brought a little bit of relief — a warm 17°C (62°F). It almost feels unreal to step outside without that biting chill in the air. Check the pic of Marley 🙂

This change means more than just comfort. At last, we can start connecting the pipes and pump water from the pond without worrying about everything freezing over and getting damaged. It’s one of those small but important seasonal turning points. Greenhouse needs water… and in my raised beds peas are coming up!

Of course, Jānis has his own unique way of starting the pump — not exactly by the book, but it works (and honestly, it’s quite funny to watch). Maybe that’s part of the charm of doing things our way.

Today is Labor Day, and we didn’t celebrate it in any special way — just working in the garden. And honestly, I loved it. New plans, new ideas… don’t worry, we won’t bite off more than we can chew. It just feels like we’ve become pros at planning and doing. 🙂

Can you guess the project?

Spring might have taken its time this year, but it finally feels like it’s here. There will be frosts, but that’s fine!

    1. We had 23°C today! That really does feel like summer already!

And yes—Marley was very happy about the warmth too.
Do you notice a big shift in your mood or routine when the first warm days arrive?

    1. Yes—that “last blast of winter” feeling… I know it so well 🙂 You almost don’t trust the warmth at first.

It’s funny how quickly it can swing the other way though!
What’s the first thing you usually rush to do in the garden when it finally warms up?

  1. I love the look of the outside of your home, a lovely design!! 62 is a bit chilly for we valley dwellers since most of the year its so warm here but I’m glad it warmed up! Do you have air conditioning for summer cooling? Is the wood for a dock and a float for swimming? Marley is so cute! Such a simple life. 😻😻❤️🥰

    1. Thank you so much 🙂 The house still has a long way to go, but we really love how it’s coming together.

And no, we don’t have air conditioning—our summers are usually manageable, though there are a few hot days when we definitely feel it. But we will add it this season 🙂 We so love comfort 🙂

  2. Never mind about the rest – I am going back to smiling at Marley SO enjoying spring – what a great photo 🙂 ! And, at the moment grinning at you being happy at 17C . . . it is 8am on a Saturday morning at 16C here and , yuck, that is too cold for comfort . . . the day will only end at 27C . . . well, it is mid-autumn . . . wish we were back in the thirties 🙂 ! Life has ‘complications’ your way . . . I can understand the winter water pipes issue but what a chore to reconnect . . . hope it worked without a problem 🙂 ! And all that timber . ., , great you have plans but methinks you have to tell us about the end result . . . bestest for that!

    1. Haha, yes—17°C felt like a celebration here 🙂 BUT today it’s 23°C. After all the cold, it suddenly feels like everything is waking up again.

And Marley really is enjoying it—he’s been outside as much as possible.

The pipes worked out in the end, thankfully! It’s always a bit of a moment each spring when we reconnect everything.
And yes… I will share what all that timber becomes 🙂 It’s still forming in our heads a little.

Do you also have those seasonal “reset” tasks where something important starts up again after a break?

      1. Not really – Australia is a huge country as you know with just about every climate under the sun but it is nowhere harsh enough for connections and reconnections! I am at 300m height somewhat 100 km south of Sydney (which has grown so much we are almost part of the metropolitan area by now!) For winter the very coldest morning would be -2C a few times during the winter with the very coldest daytime temps being around 14-16C when we all bitterly complain 🙂 ! It is mid-autumn, 9am at the moment, raining and 18C.

          1. I also love fog . . . May is the month for it here 🙂 ! I get this ‘snakes and spiders’ stuff all the time > I actually have friends in England who would love to emigrate but are afraid to do so !!! Well, I live virtually in the country (not quite as much as you) – I saw my last snake about 20 years ago altho’ I believe we have one living in the bushes close to me 🙂 ! And most of the spiders are no more poisonous than those in Latvia 🙂 ! Yes, I watch out when working outside – no big deal!!!

            1. Watch out while working outside? Come on—I’m terrible at that! When I’m out there, I just want to walk barefoot, touch the plants, lean against the trees, and pick things up without overthinking what might be underneath.

              1. Ha! Well . . . no! I would never go barefoot and I DO shake most garden beds with a stick before I put my hand near one . . . but I have done that elsewhere in the world also 🙂 !

    1. Jā, kaķi tiešām zina, kā dzīvot 🙂 Tas izklausās tik mīļi—gulēt siltumnīcā starp gurķiem!

Un tas jautājums “vai tu esi gurķis?” made me smile 😄
      Vai tev ir kaķis tagad?
