It’s peony season again.
My mother-in-law has so many different peonies growing in her garden. Every year they put on a beautiful display, but this year one flower completely surprised me.
My daughter brought me a single yellow peony.
I had never seen a yellow peony before. Pink ones in every shade? Yes. White and creamy ones? Of course. But yellow? This one felt truly special.

I placed it in an old smoked glass vase that once belonged to my grandmother. I’ve loved that vase ever since I was a little girl. It now sits on an old buffet that I also admired throughout my childhood. There is something comforting about filling old, familiar things with fresh flowers.

If you’re curious about the story behind the buffet, you can read more here:
The most surprising part wasn’t even the color.
It was the scent.
Just one flower filled the entire room with the sweetest fragrance. Every time I walked past it, I had to stop for a moment and breathe it in. It reminded me how powerful simple things can be—a single flower, an old vase, a cherished piece of furniture, and memories that quietly connect one generation to the next.
Sometimes the most ordinary summer moments become the ones we remember the longest.

It’s lovely!!
Thank you, John! 😊 I couldn’t stop looking at it. Have you got any favorite flowers growing in your garden this summer?
That’s gorgeous, Ilze. I love peonies and like you, I had never seen a yellow one.
Thank you, my friend! I was so surprised when my daughter brought it to me. I had no idea yellow peonies even existed. Do you grow peonies yourself, or do you admire them in other people’s gardens?
It’s lovely! I also saw a yellow peony for the first time this spring.
Thank you! Isn’t it funny that we both discovered yellow peonies for the first time this spring? Nature always seems to have another surprise waiting. Where did you spot yours?
On a walk in my neighbourhood. They are so pretty!
That is beautiful. I have never seen a yellow one until you shared this photo.
Thank you so much! I had exactly the same reaction—I had never seen one before either. It made the discovery even more special. Have you ever come across another flower that completely surprised you?
I can’t think of one the moment.
Such a lovely post.
Thank you! I’m so glad you enjoyed it. 😊 What flowers are bringing you joy in your garden at the moment?
Have just opened the mail early on a rainy Sunday morning – how very lovely – thank you for my smile 🙂 ! The peony looks special . . . I also remember a vase of this shape in my childhood home . . . not many peonies here, so . . .
Thank you, Eha! I’m happy this little flower brought a smile to your rainy Sunday morning. 😊 Isn’t it wonderful how certain objects, like an old vase, can instantly bring back childhood memories? Do you still have any special pieces from your family home?
It is Gorgeous and unusual. I don’t think I’ve seen a yellow one before.
Thank you, Maria! I thought exactly the same—it felt so unusual and special. Now I’ll be keeping an eye out for more yellow peonies. Have you ever discovered a flower you didn’t know existed?
The vase is perfect for that peony, too!
Thank you! I thought they suited each other perfectly. That old vase has been in the family for so many years, and it felt like the perfect home for such a special flower. Do you have a favorite heirloom that you still use today?
The yellow peony is so lovely, Ilze.
Thank you, Mary! It brightened the whole room, not only with its color but with its beautiful fragrance too. Do you have a favorite flower that’s known for its scent?
Pink peonies, white peonies, and then out of nowhere yellow. Nature has a wonderful way of keeping its best secrets until just the right moment. What a gift, and what a messenger it came with. 💛
thank you!
