Back in February, I shared my excitement about starting seeds indoors and trying winter sowing for the first time. If you missed those posts, you can catch up here and here. It feels like just yesterday I was cutting open water bottles and gently tucking seeds into the soil under layers of snow and ice.
Now, it’s April—and there’s progress!

Most of the containers have started showing signs of life. Tiny green sprouts are pushing their way through the soil, reaching for the light. It’s such a hopeful sight after a long, dark winter. So far, peas and radishes are leading the way (as expected), but even some of the slower seeds are beginning to stir.
Winter sowing might just become a yearly tradition for me. It’s low-stress, doesn’t take up indoor space, and the seedlings are already hardier than the pampered indoor ones.
I still have more work ahead—transplanting, thinning, and preparing the raised beds—but for now, I’m celebrating this small success. The garden is waking up. And so am I.

My sister is growing tomatoes and other stuff under a grow light to get them going, you two would have much to talk about, Ilze! She talks to her plants.
🙂 Love that! I’d probably get along great with your sister—talking to plants is totally my thing too! There’s just something magical about watching them grow from tiny seeds. 🌱🍅 Also, she should start the blog 🙂 so I can talk to her 😀
She’s very busy… Too busy in my opinion but it’s her time!
Totally get that! Sometimes people thrive on being busy, even if it looks like too much from the outside. As long as she’s okay with it, I guess that’s what matters!
Precisely, Ilze! I prefer to be laid back…
Does she have a family? Kids, etc?
Oh yes, three daughters!! Good kids… 😊
That must be reason why she is busy 🙂
This is fascinating to me. Your plants are off to a wonderful start!
Thank you, already used to the outdoor climate!
Wow, your plants are going like gangbusters.
Ha, Ha, Ha – thank you, Peggy!
Well done for what you’ve grown so far, I hope they feed you well over the year!
Thank you, they are feeding my soul already! 🙂
