June is one of my favourite months in the vegetable garden. Everything suddenly seems to wake up and start growing faster every single day.
The leeks are getting bigger and stronger now. They still have a long way to go before harvest, but it’s always satisfying to see them thriving after such a slow start.
We couldn’t resist pulling a few of the very first carrots. They were tiny—far too small to make a proper harvest—but they tasted wonderful. Sweet, fresh, and full of that unmistakable flavour that only homegrown carrots seem to have.

The beetroot is growing well too. Rather than waiting for the roots, we picked some of the young leaves and made one of our favourite simple meals: a beet leaf omelet. The leaves are tender and delicious, and it always feels nice to enjoy the first harvest while the plants continue growing.
My Japanese greens have become a bit overgrown. I know they should probably come out, but I keep leaving them because I haven’t decided what to sow in their place yet. Maybe dill? It always feels wasteful to leave a bed empty, so I’m taking my time and thinking about what would make the best use of the space.

The peas are looking really good this year. I picked a few pods to taste, and they were sweet and crisp. Best of all—no worms inside! That’s always a pleasant surprise and makes snacking straight from the garden even more enjoyable.
These little harvests may not fill baskets yet, but they remind me why I love gardening. Every week brings something new to taste, and every visit to the garden offers another small reward.
Summer has only just begun, and I’m looking forward to seeing what July will bring.

Wonderful!
Dear Ilze, your garden is looking wonderful. There is something so satisfying about those first little harvests, even if they are only small. Homegrown vegetables really do have a flavour all of their own.
I enjoyed reading about everything that is growing, and I smiled when you mentioned leaving the bed until you decide what to plant next. I think we’ve all done that! 😊
Thank you for sharing a little glimpse into your garden. It was a lovely read.
Yay for fresh veggies! The house and yard with garden look great under the summer sun. Have a fun weekend, Ilze! 🙏🏻😎🌞
