This weekend, we took a break from renovations and went for a long walk around the area. The weather was perfect, with sunlight streaming through the trees. As we strolled, the girls ran ahead, and everything felt calm—until we spotted a zalktis (grass snake) lying right in the middle of the road.

She is a harmless snake, just basking in the sun. Jānis, always calm, decided to move her to safety. He gently picked her up and placed her back in the grass, where she quickly slithered away into the undergrowth.
It was a simple but beautiful reminder of how closely we share our space with nature.
Are you afraid of snakes?

What fun. We don’t have any snakes to be afraid of

You have the same snakes as we do – or at least the internet thinks so. The only one venomous is Adder.

Yes – but it is not usually lethal

Afraid of snakes…?? Definitely, just like Indiana Jones!

Are you afraid of snakes or that they might be venomous?

Both! But I just don’t like the way they look…

That makes sense! But what about when they’re in pictures? Does seeing them in photos still make you uneasy, or is it easier to handle that way?

In a picture or photograph? Okay, I can live with that… But not in real life or movies!

This snake isn’t venomous and is quite small! 😊 But are there any other insects or animals you dislike? I have a hard time with spiders—I’m okay with using a jar and paper to gently catch and release them, but I can’t bring myself to handle them directly!
Once, I was doing a photoshoot with a model and a spider… OMG, I hated it! She was all, “It’s nice, come say hi!” but I didn’t get closer than two meters! 😄

It’s funny how so many people are afraid of spiders. I don’t really dislike a specific animal. I prefer some above others, like I love cats above dogs. And spiders above snakes… 😉

I love cats above dogs as well! But snakes (Latvian snakes, not Australian 🙂 ) over spiders!

Beth, I was there too… I was so scared that I jumped. But after living in the countryside for 10 years, I’ve grown more comfortable. Now, whenever I see one in need, I always try to help. And when I find one lying lifeless on the road, I pause for a moment of silence before gently moving it to the roadside.
For me, it all began when I started my self-love journey. Snakes, with their ability to shed their skin, symbolize cycles of change, renewal, and personal growth. They remind me of the importance of letting go of the past to embrace new beginnings.

Australia… it’s a different story 🙂 I’m afraid of snakes in Australia!!! And spiders!!!

Not really. Only a few spiders are poisonous and I’ve only ever seen one of them. As for snakes, in the 40+ years I’ve lived here, I have seen only three or four snakes in the wild and that’s been from a distance.

Keep the score up… or down? From what I’ve seen on Instagram, the internet, and in movies, it feels like spiders are everywhere around the house! Leave patio furniture outside for just a week, and it’s bound to have a new tenant!

Oh yes, there are spiders everywhere, but they aren’t poisonous and they don’t bite.

You are the first one from Australia that I know of, that says – they don’t bite 🙂 I believe you, but somehow nature feels better in Latvia (for me). We have a lot of spiders – out and inside, but they are small and harmless.
