The Birds at My Feeder: Bohemian waxwing

Today, a flock of Bohemian waxwings came to visit! These birds always catch my eye with their sleek feathers and striking markings, but what amuses me most is how angry they look. Their sharp gaze and confident posture make them seem unimpressed with the world around them.

Despite their grumpy expressions, watching them was a real delight. The best part? The sun was out, allowing me to crank up my shutter speed and try capturing them in flight! It wasn’t easy… and honestly, I’m not sure I got any great shots. Still, it was a good challenge—I definitely need more practice!

Moments like these remind me why I love observing nature. Even the angriest-looking birds bring a bit of joy!

    1. Thank you! Yes, Bohemian Waxwings are closely related to Cedar Waxwings—they’re both part of the Bombycilla family. Cedar Waxwings are such beautiful birds, and it’s always a treat to see them! Do you get to see them often where you are?

      1. Not so much in this part of Ohio but I had tons of them on my property in NY. I had several small flowering trees and flocks of cedar waxwings would descend and devour all the tiny crabapples! Such beautiful little bandits 🙂

        1. Cedar waxwings are such elegant birds! I love their smooth feathers and that little mask they have. It must be a beautiful sight when they visit! Do they come for berries or just stop by your feeder?

          1. I don’t do feeders, lots of garden for the birds to browse and help with bug control. I think the cedar waxwings were helping with eating the blueberries last summer, but they like the water sources especially the fountain. We have raccoons around too (here in the US; a female raccoon is the true resident I think, but she has a litter every couple years it seems), and so I love these two types of critters with their distinctive masks!

    1. That’s so interesting! I love how birds, like the cedar waxwing, can show up in different ways, even in tarot readings. The Two of Air is all about balance and decisions, which feels fitting for such a graceful bird. I hope you get the chance to see one in person soon!

          1. Oh, that’s a shame. I assume you lived in Dublin? I love Dublin. Have to go there for my cancer care. That’s two hours each way by train. We live for the moment in the middle of Ireland when it comes to east-west but nearly in Northern Ireland. We just sold up and look for something further west.

            1. I lived in Dublin, I remember the street name: Muckross Drive. It’s a lovely area! That must be a long journey for your treatment—I hope it’s going as smoothly as possible. Moving further west sounds like an exciting change! Are you looking for something more rural or just a new adventure?

              1. Oh, sorry I expressed that wrongly. It’s more aftercare. I had treatment in 2020 in the UK but still need a mammogram annually and take hormone-suppressing medication. We miss the sea terribly. And yes, more rural would be great. We are quite sound sensitive and our original idea was to find something without direct neighbours which didn’t quite work out here.
