This is my first time trying – In a Vase on Monday! Thank you, Cathy at Rambling In The Garden.
So this is my vase…

Yesterday I was in the forest. I gathered what summer offered me: tiny wild strawberries and blueberries, nestled among fresh green leaves. There’s something magical about arranging edible finds—like bringing the forest indoors for tea.

Have a lovely week you all!

When my relatives had the old house (my favourite) at Apšuciems there was a lot woodland around it and we would sometimes go and pick the wild Blueberries, they tasted really good.

I’m guessing the right name is Bilberries? But we call them Blueberries (Mellenes) and the Big cultivated bluberries (Krūmmellenes) 🙂

Mellenes, yes that word sounds familiar.

I love that, Ilze. It’s just as pretty as a flower bouquet. I wouldn’t be able to leave it too long though because my house would be full of fruit flies, lol.

Do you have a fruit fly catcher? Something they like in the trap, they can’t get out…

What a refreshing change for a vase on Monday – I try to encourage people to think ‘out of the box’, and you have done this with your edible vase. How lovely that you can pick blueberries and wild strawberries in woodland near you. Do they grow wild throughout woodlands in Latvia? In the UK blackberries are easily found growing wild, and raspberries less commonly but blueberries would be found mostly on Scottish moorlands and would be less sweet and known as bilberries

Thank you, Cathy! Yes, bilberries are the right word for these! And they both are growing wild and are abundant 🙂 This year, thanks to the weather, they look a bit bigger and not that sweet. Been raining a lot! I heard the UK summer this year is opposite… unfortunately. How it is around you? No rain at all?

Yes, very little rain for most of England since February, and hot and sunny from May onwards. I don’t water the borders but have had to water things in the greenhouse and anything else in pots.

That is a wonderful contribution to IAVOM, Ilze! I have recently noted the appearance of wild strawberries here and there in my own garden – given our very dry summer climate, their appearance is especially surprising. I do have pots containing blueberry shrubs growing on my back patio and I have thought about including some cuttings in a vase but I rarely get to the berries before the mockingbirds do!

What a lovely way to bring the forest home with you. It is very pretty! Hope you enjoy all your berries – having wild blueberries must be soooo wonderful! . Our wild strawberries are over now, so hoping for blackberries soon. 😃

Thank you, Cathy! I love blueberry (or the right word is bilberry) jam. It’s the only one I can make without added sugar! It will preserve 🙂 And will make your tongue blue 🙂

Your edible vase is most attractive Ilze. I don’t think that it would last long in my house – I would be too tempted to eat those tasty berries 😂

Thank you, Anna! 😄 I totally get that—those berries are hard to resist! I had to remind myself it’s still part of the decoration… for now!
