Still Without a Car…

We’re still stuck without our car! 🚗 The hybrid battery is still causing trouble, and while Jānis managed to find a used part that might solve the problem, nothing is certain yet. And of course, the school year has already started… which makes life without a car a real headache.

So what’s the solution in the meantime?
Well… Jānis’s brother-in-law had a “spare” rally car. 🙈 Don’t worry—it has all the official papers and permits. But oh, the sounds this thing makes! The engine roars and rattles in ways I’ve never experienced before. The kids are absolutely mortified that we have to drive that car to school. It’s not a regular family car, not even a super-cool sports car… it’s just loud and awkward.

My answer is always the same:
There are at least two options. Either we drive this car, we walk, or we take the bus. You choose! 😉

As for me… I refuse to drive it. Jānis can, but I won’t touch it! Instead, he drops me off at the forest. That’s a much better deal for me anyway, because the forest is full of sēņu karbonādes (mushrooms in egg wash) right now. 🍄✨ I found a huge Russula—perfectly good to eat and without a single fly larva inside. I’m always surprised how many people don’t realize that not all mushrooms are suitable for cooking: some are poisonous (this part is windly covered, and everyone is araid), while others, even if edible, are often full of fly larvae or already too old and dried out. This on was perfect and huge!

So we might not have our normal car back yet, but at least we’re not stuck at home—and I get to bring back basket of mushrooms!

  1. Hope the car mess does get sorted out soonest, not for the kids (!) but for you two 🙂 ! Would love to be mushrooming with you in the meanwhile . . , I would have sworn that pinky-red one would have ‘danger’ printed all over it 🙂 !!! Any bugs, snakes or creepy-crawlies around at all . . , ?

  2. I hope you get your car problems solved. My late husband and I lived in Pardaugava, and our happiest day was selling our old car for scrap, leaving behind all the car problems and expense. We then soon became capable of walking all over Pardaugava and even across the Stone Bridge into Riga. There was always transport if we needed it. Might I ask where in Latvia do you live?
