Is Spring on Its Way?

Late February always feels like a strange in-between season.

The sky stays grey, snow lies heavy on the ground, and it often feels as if winter might never end. The days move slowly, and everything becomes a little dull and tiring.

This year felt exactly like that. Snow kept falling, trees were covered in ice, and I found myself waiting for only one thing — the beginning of a new sowing season.

Seed packets are ready, plans are forming, and thoughts of green life arrive long before the weather changes.

And then suddenly — the next day, the sun appears.
Bright, warm, almost unbelievable for late February. Drops begin falling from the roof, the snow quietly settles, and even though temperatures are still below freezing, something in the air has shifted.

That first feeling.
The quiet realization that spring might actually be close.

In this video, I captured that transition — from the heaviness of winter to the anticipation of spring.

  1. Beautiful – I know that feeling, when you have had months of snow, just longing for some colour to appear in nature, and the joy when the first flowers appear. I’m also impressed by your cat – he (she?) seems to have real cattitude!

    1. Marley — our 9-year-old outdoor cat.
He technically lives outside, but in winter he moves indoors and spends most of his days sleeping on the sofas. In summer, he mainly comes inside to loudly demand food 🙂
      Neutered.

The first drops of melting water are falling from the roof. I honestly can’t remember the last time I felt this kind of joy. We barely had snow last year — or the year before — only fleeting moments. But this winter, the snow truly arrived… and it stayed. For a long time 🙂

    1. We will be okay, thank you. Spring is on its way. The sap is rising — as we say here, when the juices begin to flow, energy returns and life slowly wakes up again.
      How are you!?

  2. An absolutely beautiful video so much enjoyed! Have not seen such a winter since childhood – you do live in glorious surroundings with which I probably could no longer ‘cope’ . . . and I do like the look of Marley so comfortable on the snowy path – doesn’t he feel a cold bottom sitting on the snow 🙂 ? And won’t it be great when all the beautiful white is gone but you can begin opening those seed packets and deciding what goes where . . . 🙂 !

    1. What goes where… the hardest decision! At the end, I mix and don’t plant one plant in one spot… I look into companion planting and …. no-dig (no-til – not sure about correct terms) gardening.

      1. I can see what you mean and have a girlfriend here in Australia who does the same with great success – actually the plants seem to love it when she grows strong tall sunflowers and then twists her tomatoes around their stems and then plants herbs and flowers underneath . . . and somehow it all feels relaxed and happy 🙂 !

              1. Oh Ilze – now that I see it . . . yes, I think you sent it over some time ago and I had forgotten/misplaced. Thanks and I’ll get back to you over the weekend with perhaps something of ‘use’.

  3. I love that moment when the first sunshine breaks through after a long winter, it really does feel like hope slowly returning. Such a beautiful transition to capture on video! Spring vibes are definitely on the way.

  4. Lovely video, Ilze. The snow looks beautiful, although I prefer to enjoy it through the wonders of digital technology rather than “in the flesh”! And Marley is a good looking guy, though I question his judgement – he really needs to get back indoors and snooze on the sofa,

I’m a keen birdwatcher and was interested to see that you captured a few seconds of video of Waxwings – these are birds that we rarely see in the UK.

    1. Thank you so much! 😊
Yes — Marley definitely believes he is an outdoor adventurer, even when the sofa is clearly the better option.

I’m happy you noticed the Waxwings! We see them some winters when they come looking for berries, and it always feels a little special when they appear.

Thank you for watching and for your lovely comment — always nice to meet another birdwatcher! 🐦

        1. Yes! When we first moved away from Riga, the capital of Latvia, I was deeply moved by how close nature suddenly felt. At the time, I thought it was just a phase — something that would fade with time. But here I am, twelve years later, and whenever I need to get away, nature still surprises me. Every single time. Mostly it’s the fields full of birds — unseen ones, or a raven flying by so magically.

      1. Thank you for those links, Ilze. Just from a very quick glance I can see there’s a lot there that I shall enjoy; it’s also noticeable that many of the species I see here are familiar to you too. I look forward to working through your birding posts over the next few days – you will hear from me again! 😊😊😊

My most recent post about birds (I write about lots of other stuff too!) is here https://64reflections.home.blog/2026/02/04/celebrating-world-wetlands-day-with-the-heron-family/

At the top of that post you can see that I’ve put it in my “Birds” category – shown in red. Click on that, and it should – hopefully!?? – list my other posts about birds. Enjoy!
