The original plan was simple: go out for a slice of cake and a good cup of coffee – since it was Home Cafe weekend. I had cake and coffee in the arts studio, so…
.. somehow, I came home with something even sweeter—two beautiful handmade bowls that I absolutely fell in love with. They both have the cutest little feet, which somehow makes them even more charming. I don’t know why, but tiny feet on pottery instantly make me smile.
The first bowl is made from white clay that has been covered with black clay (a technique called sgraffito). The pattern was then carefully carved through the black layer, revealing the white clay underneath. I love the contrast of the two colours and the handmade feel of every single line.
The second bowl is made from black clay and finished with a mixture of beeswax and linseed oil The feet on this one is a bit creapy but still love it.
I honestly couldn’t choose between them, so I broke the bank and they both came home with me.

The artist was also the one who made cakes – they were delicious! And the pottery is beautiful as well.
Very nice, Ilze. I love pottery too. The legs on the big brown bowl would worry me a bit. You’ll have to be very careful with it so they don’t break off. I have some clay salmon that rest on their “fins” and a couple of those have broken off. They are smaller pieces that have to hold a lot of weight and the slightest bump can crack them off. But if you’re careful you should have a lot of enjoyment from these beautiful bowls.
Thank you! 😊 I’m not too worried, as this bowl will live on my windowsill all the time, so it won’t be moved around much. I think I’ll mostly use it as a photography prop and to hold all the little nature treasures I can’t resist picking up when I’m out for a walk—interesting stones, seed pods, pine cones, feathers, and whatever else catches my eye. The pottery is beautiful and one of a kind, Ilze. We need to support our artists.
We have to support our local artists! 😊 Especially when you’re sitting in a little pop-up café, eating cake, admiring the beautiful pottery on the shelves and windowsills, and almost crying because you think they’re just props… until you finally ask and discover they’re actually for sale! 😄

Me too, it better stay put! 😂The first thing I thought of when I saw the legs was my dogs toenails…they looked like that.
I don’t have dog, maybe that is why I wanted the bowl with toenails 🙂

Exactly! You can always earn more money, but if you leave those adorable bowls behind, you might never get another chance to bring them home. So they simply had to come with me!
