4th May – Latvia’s Quiet Celebration of Freedom

from 2017

Every year on 4th May, Latvia celebrates the restoration of its independence — a peaceful yet powerful moment in our history. On this day in 1990, we chose freedom, reclaiming our voice after decades of Soviet occupation.

Unlike louder national holidays, this one feels more personal. We raise the flag, have a white tablecloth, and cook dinner together. It’s a day for reflection, gratitude, and gentle pride.

For our family, it’s usually simple: a meaningful conversation with the kids, maybe a slice of cake after dinner. Definitely no fireworks (for all the followers in the USA), just a deep sense of belonging and freedom.

Lai dzīvo Latvija.

  1. You are celebrating an event within living memory, and that makes a huge difference in how you feel about it compared to other countries celebrating their independence granted centuries ago. Happy Freedom Day!

    1. Thank you! Yes, it really does feel different when the memory is still so close — when people you know lived through it, or even stood in the crowd that day – defending Latvia – like Jānis’ mother!. It’s not just history; it’s part of our family stories. Wishing you a beautiful day too!
