Make your own Flower Crown!

When it comes to making a ziedu vainags (flower crown), you don’t need wire, thread, string, or tape. Nature gives us everything we need. With just wildflowers and smilgas (bentgrass or other strong wild grass), you can make a crown that stays firm, holds its shape beautifully, and brings joy both in midsummer and long after.

The trick is to use long, flexible grasses like smilgas. These act as natural ties between the flowers and keep everything together. The weaving method creates tension that holds the crown firmly without the need for anything artificial.

So first you need to gather the materials:

As you can see in my picture above, I have daisies, galium, and lots of smilgas.

Then there are two options on how to weave the flower crown without using any wire, thread, or string.

Woven Daisy Chain (Loop & Wrap)

This is the soft, flowing version: Take your first flower and lay the second next to it. Wrap the second flower’s stem around the first flower’s head and stems, then pull all stems to the side. Repeat with each new flower, always wrapping its stem around the bunch. As you go, the stems weave themselves in and stay firm. To close the crown, loop the last flower’s stem around the very first flower — it holds like a circle. This is how I made my flower crowns for ages…

    Braided (Like a Hair Braid)

    This is the sturdy and this is how I do my flower crowns now:

    Take 3 long grass stems with flowers and braid them like you would hair. Add one flower + grass team at a time by placing it into the braid before each crossover. It creates a flat and even crown, perfect for wearing. If your grass is too stiff, soften it first by rolling it gently or dampening it slightly. Love this one! It’s fast and easy, and

    Flower Crown Tips You’ll Want to Try

    1. Make it in the meadow
    Pick one flower at a time, and add it directly to your crown as you go. This not only avoids waste, but also creates a deeper connection to the process. You take only what you need, and nothing more.

    2. Make it a day ahead
    You can prepare your flower crown the evening before the celebration. Simply place it in a plastic bag or food container and store it in the fridge overnight. It stays fresh and flexible.

    3. Freeze it for winter joy
    This is the one I want to try next — make a flower crown in summer and freeze it, sealed in a bag or container. On a cold, dark winter day, take it out and remember the warmth of the sun and buzzing bees. Even if it’s a bit fragile after thawing, it’s a powerful reminder of summer’s magic.
