Vacation Day 6: Slow & Sweet

Today started slow… and stayed that way.

I finally sat down to reply to all your lovely comments — something I hadn’t managed to do for the past five days. It took quite a while to go through them all and answer each one, but it felt so nice to catch up. By 2 p.m., I was still on the blog, happily lost in words and connections.

I think I needed a day like this. No rushing, no big plans, no “must-do” list — just a quiet, relaxed day in the middle of my vacation. It’s a good reminder that resting is just as important as doing.

In the late afternoon, I wandered over to the greenhouse to check on my cucumber jungle — and yes, there were cucumbers! Helmi loves them, so that made her day. Then I headed to the furrows (remember, I have four). The broad beans are ready — I boiled them whole, pods and all, and enjoyed them with kefir. The leeks are full with snails 🙂

While walking back, I spotted a butterfly in the middle of the wet grass. Its wings looked fine and dry, so I’m hoping it was just taking a little rest.

Had pica for dinner…. It’s Friday – we have our pizzeria open on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

I checked on the fermented vegetables I started at the fermentation event — they’ve begun to bubble! That’s a good sign, and I love it. I also started fermenting cucumbers today, and made a drink from the starter that looks like grains… I think it might be water kefir.

And then… a magical ending to the day. I couldn’t sleep, so I stepped outside at 2 a.m. The full moon hung in the sky, surrounded by a soft fog curling around the trees.

The whole scene had a quiet, mysterious beauty — the kind of moment you just stand in and breathe in deeply.

Went in bed around 3AM.

      1. I’m focused on being prepared for my upcoming surgery. I’m the type of person who tries to think of every possible scenario and that’s not realistic. Having one arm to use while the other is in a sling for a month will be challenging. I got nervous for a short time yesterday. I won’t be blogging for a couple of weeks, which is going to be so tempting but with one hand, that makes it very difficult. 🙂

  1. This full. moon has been absolutely magnificent, glowing so brightly- I had difficulty sleeping this week because of it, but it was a reward in itself to step out of my bedroom and stand on my balcony in awe of that golden globe.

    1. I completely understand — sometimes the full moon’s glow is so powerful it feels like it’s filling the whole night with magic. It’s amazing how something so bright can both disrupt sleep and bring such awe at the same time. Standing on your balcony soaking it in sounds like the perfect way to connect with that moment.

  2. Am truly smiling at your abilities as a gardener and in the kitchen! What health and taste in these brilliant pickled vegetables. Water kefir I have to look up . . . oh, I am ‘jealous’ 🙂 !!!

    1. Thank you so much! Gardening and kitchen experiments definitely keep life interesting—and delicious! You should definitely give water kefir a try sometime; it’s such a fun, fizzy little treat (I drank one at the fermentation event, but never made my own. Fingers crossed it will work!).
