Four years ago, I made dozens of beeswax candles. Most of the beeswax I used was bought from my friend Aija, but until this Līgo, I had never actually seen where it came from.
I absolutely loved visiting this place.
Surrounded by nature, this is where Aija brings the honey frames after the harvest. Here she extracts the honey from the honeycomb, removes the empty wax combs, and later melts the old beeswax to clean and purify it. The cleaned wax is then ready for its next life—whether that’s becoming candles, cosmetics, or fresh foundation sheets for the bees.
It was fascinating to finally connect the whole story. For years, I only knew the beautiful golden rolls of beeswax that I bought from Aija and turned into candles. Now I’ve seen the place where all that work begins and witnessed the care and dedication behind every batch of wax. That is why it’s aroma is still there after 4 years of storing the candles!
There’s something very special about understanding where the materials we use actually come from. It made me appreciate every beeswax candle I created even more.

It really is interesting how often we use materials without ever seeing where they begin 🙂 I only got curious after making candles myself. Do you enjoy using handmade or local products more, or does it not matter so much where things come from?
