Embracing the Last Day of October

As October draws to a close, the crisp air and fading autumn colors remind us of the beauty in transitions. Today is the perfect moment to cherish the little things: the crunch of leaves underfoot, cozy evenings with warm drinks, and the excitement of… not Halloween, but the approaching Mārtiņdiena.

November is also significant for Latvia, with the 11th commemorating the Lāčplēsis Day, honoring those who fought for Latvia’s independence, and the 18th celebrating Independence Day itself. As we say goodbye to October, let’s embrace the new beginnings that November brings.

  1. I have a day off work and a yard full of leaves so if the weather holds I will spend my day out in the fresh air, raking 🙂 I have some nice things on my calendar for November and December. Some Christmas concerts and celebrations. And I’m looking forward to getting out my Christmas decorations and putting up the tree. I do it in mid November so I can get the full enjoyment of it a little longer 🙂

There’s something so satisfying about spending time outside in the crisp autumn air, especially with all those leaves—perfect for getting into the cozy spirit. And it sounds like your November and December are shaping up beautifully! Christmas concerts, celebrations, and decorations really do bring such warmth to the season. Putting up your tree in mid-November sounds like a wonderful way to enjoy the magic a little longer 😊 I usually wait until after Independence Day, on the 18th of November—it feels like the perfect transition into the holiday season!

      1. It’s been in the 90’s F but today we had a cool front so it’s about 10 degrees cooler. It will be true Winter starting in December. We usually get approx 3 months of Winter but is can always be cut short. We’re running 10 degrees over normal now.

  3. Your photos are beautiful, Ilze, and I followed the link too, thanks for the history lesson! Latvia is a beautiful country, I would love to meet the people. There might be a language barrier though. ❤️😊

        1. WHAT!? Our letters are the same – only a few extras. We don’t have x, y, and w. Latvian isn’t easy (some say) cause the endings of verbs change depending on gender, number, tense, mood, and aspect. For example, Latvian verbs can have many different forms depending on the subject and the described time.

            1. John, come on! Nothing to do with Russia 😀 except we were occupied and spent a lot of time under the Soviet Union. Open up the internet and Google Short History of Latvia or something like that 🙂
