First Residents in Our Raised Veggie Beds

The first residents have moved into our new raised veggie beds!

First, I planted out the leeks I’ve been growing from seed since February 21 — DE CARENTAN. They are still very small, but I hope they’ll love their new home and grow strong over the summer. I already can’t wait to harvest one for a warm mushroom soup someday.

To keep the leeks company, I started thinking more about companion planting. That’s why I sowed Detroit beetroot on one side of the bed and Nantes carrots on the other.

And for the very first time, I’m trying trailing nasturtiums (Luteus). I hope they will happily spread across the whole end of the 6-meter-long raised bed with their leaves and flowers.

I can’t wait to see this bed slowly come alive!

Also, Marley was everywhere helping me, my hands were covered in dirt, and I didn’t manage to take more photos.

  1. I can totally tell that you’re a few weeks ahead of us, based on the size of the leeks alone 🤣 But I just realized… you’re close enough that we can share seeds! This is gonna make next spring so much more interesting…

    1. Ha ha ha! Yes, seed sharing feels like such a responsibility! Or maybe I’m exaggerating 😅 I still don’t really know how to collect seeds properly… at least not yet. I know how to save seeds from marigolds, calendulas, and poppies, but tomatoes, cucumbers, and things like that still feel a bit mysterious to me. Can you teach me?

And about the leeks — they were under grow lights first, and then moved to the windowsill… while our last frost date is usually around the 25th of May. Though, to be fair, I know leeks probably don’t care at all 😅

  2. Neither can we wait for your results . . . your imaginative planting sounds like a natural art work . . . well, plants are live, so I do hope they all enjoy growing together and showing off to you by putting on extra growth extra fast . . . 🙂 !

    1. 🙂 Thank you, Eha! I love your comments! I can already imagine it all in my mind and see the end result. Now it just depends on the summer… and, of course, on my gardening skills as well 😅 And I’m new 🙂 So not much experience 🙂

      1. smile I would not worry! The plants see that you care and work hard and will respond! Does not matter if you make a few mistakes! I have a very clever (and totally sane!) girlfriend who grows all her vegetables and flowers wherever she is living . . . very bright woman but actually talks to the plants and puts music on in the garden and mixes vegetables and flowers all over the place . . . well, you should see the results > somewhere the love works!

  3. Detroit, eh? I’ve been to that city many times as I’m a Michigan native. I had no idea the city has it’s own veggie!

      1. I can’t reply the usual way, a button called Report is on top of the other button. Nicely done, WP. Since when do we have a Report button? Anyway, I had no idea! Those flowers are like poodle tail balls!
