A Rainy Day in Salacgrīva and a Field of Lupins

Sometimes the weather has a way of testing our patience.

This weekend we were in Salacgrīva, my hometown, for a birthday celebration of a lovely boy!

Unfortunately, the weather decided not to cooperate. It was cold, rainy, and windy, and since the celebration was outdoors, we spent most of the day trying to stay warm. By the time it was over, my feet were completely soaked, cold and tired, and that cold, damp feeling had settled deep into my bones.

But then, on the drive home, we came across something beautiful.

Along the roadside was a huge field of lupins in full bloom. Purple, blu and pink with white Goutweed flowers stretched across the landscape, brightening an otherwise grey day. We couldn’t resist stopping for a closer look and a few photographs.

I can only imagine how stunning that field would look on a sunny evening or during a golden sunset. Even under cloudy skies, it was breathtaking.

Judging by the little “tunnels” winding through the flowers, we were not the first people to stop there. Clearly, many others had been tempted to walk into the field for photographs. The paths through the lupins were a giveaway!

It was a lovely reminder that even when a day doesn’t go quite as planned, something unexpected can still make it special.

Have you ever had a miserable day rescued by an unexpected beautiful sight?

  1. This will be the ‘silliest’ comment you will ever have heard but – if someone had shown me this young lad’s photo totally ad hoc and asked what nationality he was – I would have said Latvian – quite without the pic arriving on your post !? Yes, the lupins are lovely and you dressed just right to fit in 🙂 !

    1. Haha, Eha, that made me smile! 😊 Maybe there really is a certain “Latvian look” after all. I’ll take that as a compliment on his behalf! And thank you—I didn’t even realize my jacket matched the lupins until I looked at the photos later. Do people where you live ever say someone has a look that’s typical of your country?

      1. Australia ia SO multi-cultural these days and people intermarry all the time and the children and grandchildren may have have a dozen nationalities in their background . . . so, not much . . . a bit of a guessing game at times so one does not say the ‘wrong thing’!

        1. It’s interesting how people learned to not say “wrong thing”. Here in Latvia – it’s easier then in USA or other mixed countries 🙂

    1. They really were! The grey weather almost made the colours stand out even more. Have you ever come across a wildflower field that made you stop the car just to admire it?

  2. Oh, my!! What a beautiful field of lupins. Great photos. Thank you for sharing. Hope your feet warmed up quickly and rested them.

    1. Thank you, Mags! My feet eventually thawed out after a hot shower and a cup of tea. 😊 The flowers definitely made the soggy day worth remembering. What’s the most beautiful unexpected place you’ve stumbled upon during a drive?

      1. I did not stumble upon it, but I found Switzerland to be more beautiful than I was expecting. Although I had heard that it was beautiful and seen pictures the beauty was far beyond what the pictures and words depicted.

        1. I can believe that! 😊 Switzerland is one of those places that somehow manages to be even more breathtaking in person than in photographs. There’s just something about seeing those mountains with your own eyes that pictures can’t quite capture. I hope I get to visit one day!

          1. I too hope you get to visit. There are some very beautiful places in Germany too. I lived in Germany for almost 2 years. back in the 60’s.

    1. That’s exactly how it felt—a burst of colour in the middle of a grey, rainy day. Nature certainly knows how to surprise us. Do you have a favourite wildflower that always catches your eye?

    1. Thank you so much, Peter! I honestly didn’t plan the outfit, but it worked out perfectly with the flowers. 😊 Despite being cold, I couldn’t help smiling once we saw that field. Do you enjoy photographing flowers yourself, or are landscapes more your thing?

        1. Haha, I think the other way around! Flowers are easy 🙂 Is there a particular landscape or type of scenery you enjoy photographing the most?

    1. Thank you! It really was one of those places that made us stop and simply enjoy the moment. Have you ever found an unexpected spot that turned an ordinary day into a memorable one?

  3. Such a beautiful find, Ilze! I would stop for photos too! I love the way the flowers grow vertically. ❤️ The Like button didn’t render for me.

    1. Thank you, John! I don’t think anyone could have driven past without stopping. Those tall flower spikes were so striking. ❤️ And thank you for letting me know about the Like button—I really appreciate it. I’ll have to investigate what’s causing that. Have you noticed that issue on other WordPress blogs recently, or just mine? Please try again and let me know!

    1. Paldies! ❤️ Man arī ļoti žēl par to Like pogu.

    1. Yes, that’s me! 😊 I couldn’t resist stepping into the edge of the field for a photo. The purple cardigan turned out to be a happy coincidence with all those lupins! Have you ever found yourself perfectly matching a place without planning it?

    1. Thank you so much, Mary! It really was a gorgeous sight and completely changed the mood of the day. Have you ever had a disappointing day that ended with an unexpected beautiful surprise?
